Method 1: Using Digital TDS meter
The easiest method to check TDS in the water at home is using a digital TDS meter. The meter helps you check the TDS in water in a few simple steps. You can also use the meter to check the TDS of RO water to see if the RO is functioning properly.
How to check TDS in the water at home using Digital TDS meter-
- Switch the meter on.
- There is a ‘TEMP’ button. When you click on it, the temperature will be displayed in the form of degree Celsius.
- To return to the TDS mode, click on the ‘TEMP’ button again.
- Open the protective cap of the meter.
- Now, put the meter in water. You will see a mark in the meter showing the maximum immersion level. Don’t immerse the meter in water, higher than the marked level.
- Once you immerse the meter in water, gently stir it.

- Weigh the evaporating dish- Empty the evaporating dish and keep it free from any dust and particles. Weigh it and note the weight. Let’s mark this weight as A.
- Use a stirring stick to stir the water sample- Stir the water sample that you have taken and keep stirring vigorously to evenly distribute all the particles in the water.
- Collect 50 ml of a water sample using the pipette- Use the pipette to collect 50 ml of the water sample. Keep stirring the water even while collecting the sample. If you don’t stir continuously, the particles in the water will settle in the bottom of the beaker with sample water and this will not give an accurate result.
- Use filter paper to filter the water- Pour the water from the pipette to another beaker through a filter paper. Repeat the process about 3 times to ensure that all particles are collected in the filter paper.
- Transfer the particles from the filter paper to the evaporating dish- If there are particles in the filter paper, then transfer them to the evaporating dish and let them dry.
- Weigh the evaporating dish- Weigh the evaporating dish with the particles inside, after the particles have dried. Note down the weight. Let’s mark this weight as B.
- Measure TDS- Subtract the weight of the particles in the evaporating dish (B) with the weight of the evaporating dish when it was empty (A).
Now multiply the result with 1000.
